Introduction to Skills for Volunteers in School (formerly Practical Parent Helpers), is a long established non-accredited course, developed by the WEA. This short course will give students the knowledge, skills and understanding to support children's learning through a range of fun and practical activities.

Course aim

To give students the background knowledge and confidence to become an effective parent helper in school and/or to help their children's learning in the home.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No specific experience or skills but students will need to be able to work at level 1 or above in English

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify 3 ways children can develop their learning through play.
  • List 3 practical strategies to support children's development in English.
  • List 3 practical strategies to support children's development in maths.
  • List 3 practical strategies to support children's development in science.
  • List 3 practical strategies for encouraging children's social, emotional and behavioural development

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided by the tutor, including practical materials and hand-outs, A notebook and pen would be useful for students to take notes, but there is no formal requirement for this.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Students may wish to progress onto the accredited Volunteers Helping in Schools course if they are ready for study at level 2.
