Local History LDD (covering the 1960s & 70s)

The course will look at the events and people that shaped the decades of the 1960's and the 1970's. We will look at things such as the music, fashion and politics of the time. Events we will look at will include things such as England winning the world cup and the first female Prime Minister. Other subjects covered will include advances in technology, what was on television at the time and what we were doing in our leisure time. The course will include several trips out to discover what life would have been like living in Portsmouth during the era.

Course aim

The course will cover the decades of the 1960's and the 1970's in Britain. We will also look at the local history of Portsmouth during these decades.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • The course is for people who have a learning difficulty or disability, especially shy or socially isolated people.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Have a basic knowledge of what life was like living in the 1960's and 1970's.
  • Understand what life was like for different people in society during the two decades.
  • Have a knowledge of the notable and famous people of the time.
  • Have a better understanding of the advancements in technology that took place during the era.
  • Have a feeling of improved self confidence and an improved feeling of well being.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • Students have a timeline that they will add pictures to during the course.

  • Nothing else is needed

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
