From silent films to La la Land music has played an important role in adding to the visual side of cinema. With recordings and films (also live music) we'll explore how this is still creative and relevant.

Course aim

The course aims to demonstrate how composers have written music for the cinema and still do: comparing the styles they use.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • You will be able to develop a wider perspective on how music is used in films and explain your views in discussion.
  • You will be able to reflect on how changes in technology have affected the use of music in films.
  • You will be able to critically evaluate how successful composers are in creating atmosphere or adding something extra to films.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

  • Nothing else is needed
