Day School: The Rise of British Landscape Painting 1750-1850

This course will explore the growth of landscape painting in Britain over a critical century in its development, within its broader social and political context. Topics to be covered will include: the emergence of landscape painting; topographical landscapes; the aesthetics of the sublime and the picturesque; Constable and 'the English landscape'; industrial landscapes.

Course aim

To consider the growing interest in topographical images, explore aesthetic notions such as 'the picturesque' and 'the sublime', and discuss how landscape artists engaged with ideas of Britishness and modernity.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify different aesthetic approaches to the depiction of landscapes.
  • Explain some of the ways in which landscape art shed light on and shaped social attitudes of the period.
  • Look at examples of landscape painting and comment on some of the features of their period they display.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • there will be informal verbal feedback as appropriate

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No preparatory reading is required. Some initial suggestions for general reading include: Michael Rosenthal, British Landscape Painting (1982) Ann Bermingham, Landscape and Ideology: The English Rustic Tradition, 1740-1860 (1987)
