The South East at Work

Ref: C3741678

Across history the wide diversity and range of employments has created patterns that we can discern to the present. All work revolves around a trilogy; that of Primary employments, the collection of raw materials, low value and often bulky, value is added to these Primaries by Secondary manufacturing making them more useful . Finally the goods need to be transported, stored and sold; the Tertiary trades, facilitators in the industrial process. The South East is often referred to as a Service Economy area with a host of Tertiary industries, but it is one with a long history of Primary trades which have created the prominent chalk pits along the North and South Downs; Secondary manufactories such as the Wealden glass and iron industries. It is the home of the seaside resort, the epitome of a Tertiary trade with its leisure activities all of which require Primary goods and Secondary manufacturing! We will look at a wide range of factors in Sussex, Kent, Surrey and of course London.
