Sketching in and Around Hastings Old Town

Five visits to Hastings Old Town to draw sketch and photograph, gathering material for later paintings. As a group students will be introduced to aspects of Life of the Beach and the traditional sights and atmosphere of The Stade and Rock-a-Nore, in the vicinity of the Jerwood Gallery. The five sessions will be based upon different aspects- The boats - the net huts and fish shops - The fishermans' museum - Old timber framed houses - Figures in landscape.

Course aim

This is an active course designed to take the group of students on a tour of Hastings Old Town in order to make on the spot sketches. Focus is especially on the Stade and the fishing boats.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course will enable people to become more fluent at capturing images in drawing leading to greater naturalism in their painting . Anyone will enjoy using a sketchbook.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Students will be able to draw the beach and fishing boats in pen, pencil or paint.
  • Students will be able to draw net huts and fish shops in a variety of sketching materials.
  • Students will be able to select good view points and deal with perspective in painting architecturally interesting houses.
  • Select from a collection of images from the fishermans' museum to draw and sketch.
  • Share ideas about own and others' work discussing aims and outcomes in a group.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to use a sketchbook and build up a weekly journal of all images made on the course. we will be looking at each others work.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • Photographs can be used to work from- or to have as art works in themselves. Students can define their own interests and record whatever they see fit.

What else do I need to know?

  • You will need a small stool to sit on, a hard bound sketchbook, selection of pencils, crayons or pens- including biro's. You can have a set of watercolours or watercolour pens if you like. All held in a shopping bag, or similar.
