Extending Watercolour Skills

Weekly topics with imagery designed to explore different technical matters. eg painting water, changing scale or using monochrome. By the end of the course you will be able to select themes which highlight your best skills.

Course aim

Discover ways to make a step forward in your painting. Go deeper into ways to avoid pitfalls in composition and colour mixing. Consolidate your strengths and find your style.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Anyone who is eager to learn more about their painting and extend their abilities.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explore a range of techniques within your painting.
  • Identify your strongest skills. select subject matter which will demonstrate these skills.
  • Pick one artist whose work you like. Make a study of one picture.
  • Develop a critical vocabulary for describing what you want to achieve in your work.
  • Create one painting with a theme highlighting a social or universal concern. eg. Exile, Family, Environment or Food.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time
  • Some research will be an advantage- particularly when selecting personal imagery.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be numerous tasks appropriate to the course.

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • watercolour paints. watercolour paper. A3 or A4. Round brushes size 4,6, and 8. If you buy one make it a 6. 2B pencil, rubber and sharpener.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
