Art History: 20th Century Art at the Jerwood Gallery

By discussing a selection of the works face to face in the gallery, the course offers the opportunity to study works from this important collection and explore how these works fit into the wider context of twentieth century art and beyond. We will focus on works on display at the time of the course, including those in temporary exhibitions. Key social, political and cultural events and influences will also be evaluated in order to put specific artworks into context.

Course aim

To explore in detail some of the key works on display in the Jerwood Gallery and evaluate their position in the wider context of 20th Century art.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • In discussion, display some knowledge of the background of selected artists and other examples of their work for reference.
  • Use appropriate vocabulary and terminology to discuss specific works in some detail.
  • Evaluate the artistic, social and historical context in which selected artists were /are working.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You will be given the opportunity to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
