Provincial Literature

Ref: C3741582

We’ll discuss masterpieces of English literature on the theme of Provincial Life. In the bi-centenary year of her death it is fitting to start with Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, with its witty observation and depiction of manners, marriage and money. George Eliot’s Middlemarch, subtitled A Study of Provincial Life evokes diverse lives and changing fortunes. Hardy’s The Mayor of Casterbridge depicts passionate and tragic rivalry in a market town and the catastrophic effects of a wife sale. Benson’s Mapp and Lucia chronicles provincial Tilling (Rye) with malicious delicacy and wit. Finally we explore provincial Welsh life in Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood.
