We will read & study the following three novels:- The Magic Mountain Thomas Mann The Trial Franz Kafka The Man without Qualities( Vol 1) Robert Musil

Course aim

To explore the impact of German Modernism,by studying novels by three of its greatest authors

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • Anyone interested in Literature & with a good understanding of English

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • compare & contrast the literary approaches of Mann, Kafka & Musil
  • demonstrate my ability to critically analyse texts through group discussion
  • describe how "Modernist texts" both emerge from the Zeitgeist ,following World War 1 & contribute to it.Typically there will be structured grop

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • You will need to obtain copies of the three novels & to complete the required reading prior to each session

  • See above i.e. you must read the three novels prior to the relevant session
