Day School: Focus on Faces - A day School on the Portait

The four sections of this day school will explore the history of portrait making in western art, the innovations associated with modern portrait making, the contribution of three dimensional art and the contribution of photography. Major portrait makers such as Rembrandt, Picasso, Ingres, Bernini and Karsh will all be covered in this wide ranging day school. Students will be given the opportunity to discuss their own experience of either portrait making or having their portrait made.

Course aim

This day school will investigate the exciting contribution that portrait making has made to the history of art through an exploration of sculpture, painting and photography.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify one major portrait by Rembrandt.
  • Identify and describe on major portrait made by Bernini.
  • Begin to discuss the various ways in which portraits have changed over time in western art.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

  • Nothing else is needed
