Day School: An Introduction to Ancient Egypt

This well illustrated day school will introduce key aspects of the ancient Egyptian civilization which endured for three millennia. We consider major historical developments, pyramids and their construction, tomb art and writing, specifically hieroglyphs.

Course aim

This day school will introduce some highlights from the ancient Egyptian civilization, providing a historical framework for ancient Egypt and studying specific topics such as art, the pyramids and hieroglyphs.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Describe the nature and importance of the relationship between the Egyptian civilization and its physical environment
  • Discuss the possible construction process of the pyramids at Giza
  • Read together with a sign list a king’s name in a cartouche

How will I be taught?

  • Three of the sessions will be well-illustrated presentations with lots of chance for interaction. The hieroglyphs session will involve some 'practical' work with pre-prepared worksheets with tutor support.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Informal and ongoing, no exams or tests

What else do I need to know?

  • A pen and paper will be useful

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • While nothing is required or expected, if time allows reading an introductory text to ancient Egypt would be beneficial.
