Day School - Drawing Animals with Pastels

Experimenting with chalk pastel techniques then creating a pastel drawing of an animal in the afternoon. Suitable for complete beginners and those wanting to extend their skills- no experience necessary. Basic materials and equipment provided. Students may bring their own photograph to make the final piece of work if they wish – if they have more than one of the same subject they should bring them all. Copying someone else’s painting or drawing is not recommended. Looking at: • Types of pastel • Choosing paper • Tools • Techniques for drawing textures (fur etc) • What to look for when drawing animals (placing eyes/beaks /noses etc.) • Making a final drawing from photographs

Course aim

Experimenting with chalk pastel techniques and using these to produce a drawing of an animal.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Choose which colour paper to use to compliment the drawing
  • Use mark making to make textures
  • Use proportion to place features on a head .

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Basic materials and equipment will be provided.Please wear an apron or old clothes .
