Republic, restoration, plotting, rebellion and revolution, a king executed, the English Republic, restoration and then the overthrow of a second king. Forty years of political turmoil - years that had a huge impact on the way in which our government and nation evolved. This course considers events both nationally and locally, and the roles played by local people in what was one of the most turbulent period of our history. It will appeal to all those interested both in the dramatic sweep of history and the impact upon the daily life of local people.

Course aim

Regicide, republic, restoration, invasion and revolution. Forty years that changed the nation in ways that still influence us today. Examine how local people fared during these difficult and dangerous times.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • List key shifts in political power between 1649 and 1689 and identify local people and places connected with those changes.
  • Assess events between 1649 and 1689 and identify those that still influence life today.
  • Identify local people who played key roles in these turbulent times and describe their activities.
  • Identify local and contemporary source material and use it to inform thinking about the period.
  • Describe how rapid shifts of power and changes in religious practice influenced the lives of local people.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A map of the area, good road atlas would be suitable
