Technique and Imagination - Enhance your Camera Skills

The course explains the basic science of photography and has been designed for digital camera users (Compact or SLR) who have a keen interest in improving their photographic skills. It includes practical sessions when you will learn how to find the fastest way to access the different functions of your camera and how to control and combine them creatively to compose great shots. You will be taught how to use the light to take digital photographs of people, objects and landscapes.

Course aim

To introduce students to the basic science and nature of photography. To understand how to use and take control of your camera. To introduce how to use the light to take pictures and get creative exploring composition.

Who is the course for?

- The course is suitable for students with some experience and also for beginners. However, a basic knowledge of your camera is recommended.

What topics will this course cover

- The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning - You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning - You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time - Demonstration, Question and answer, Presentation, Discussion, Activity outside class time, Group work, Observation, Individual work and Practical work.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

How will I know I'm making progress?

- A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion - You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor - You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning - You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions - There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

- Your camera and its fully-detailed camera instruction manual

Reading and information sources

- The tutor will give students appropriate links to useful websites and books during the course.

What could the course lead to?

- The tutor would be happy to discuss with students the possibilities for furthering their knowledge of the subject. This might be via courses operated by the WEA (and other providers), or via selective use of the internet.
