This course will teach you how to portray inland water in its many different forms. Using a water-based medium, (watercolour, acrylic or water -mixable oil), you will study how to paint still water and reflections, moving water and waterfalls, rivers, floods and lakes, canals, ponds and puddles. You will also learn how to incorporate figures, birds, marginal plants and man-made structures. This will lead to painting a landscape incorporating water of your choice.

Course aim

To provide artists with techniques to paint water in landscapes using a water-based medium, (watercolour, acrylic or water mixable oil).

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • paint still water with reflections
  • paint moving water or the surface of water which is broken by the wind, birds or boats
  • paint a waterfall
  • incorporate birds, marginal plants, figures and man-made structures

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • It is optional for you to finish paintings at home as it is unlikely you will have time to complete a painting in a lesson.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • Individual guidance and feedback will be given during every lesson. Some of your work may be photographed as a record of your progress.

What else do I need to know?

  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
  • Weekly emails will be sent to you with reference material attached and suggestions for materials needed for each lesson.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • You may find it helpful to take photographs of water that you might want to paint. Think about the composition. It will be a great help when you come to paint the picture. Consider reflections, birds, objects, boats etc that may be on the water.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Join a local art group which will open up opportunities to other art events.
