Walks: London and its Environs

London is the most diverse city in the world. Many distinct places lie within its boundaries. We shall find unusual corners, unexpected history and remarkable buildings which illustrate its development both socially and culturally, coupled with a pleasant morning’s walk! Please note: Occasionally a walk may include a venue with an entrance fee. Total fees will never exceed £20 in any term.

Course aim

By walking through five different areas of London, this course will help to give an understanding of the social, historic and cultural development of London.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • You should be able to walk at a reasonable pace for up to two hours.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1.Develop an appreciation of certain areas of London and London life.
  • 2.Acquire fresh knowledge on a range of different aspects of London.
  • 3. Benefit in terms of health through the walks.
  • 4. Feel part of a group and have made friends.
  • 5. Follow up the topics covered in the course either by individual research and study or taking up other courses.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • The class will be encouraged to express their opinions and make contributions throughout the course and to shape its content.

What else do I need to know?

  • Appropriate shoes and clothing for walking during spring. Students may wish to make notes so writing/materials could be brought along.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No preparation is required. Student notes on each walk will be provided and will include suggestions for further reading/activity.
