The Angevins 1154-1216

Ref: C3741394

This course will explore the reigns of Henry II and his sons Richard I & John. Under Henry II and his queen, Eleanor of Aquitaine, the Angevin empire stretched from Scotland to the Pyrenees. Henry’s legal reforms established the jury system in England but his dispute with Thomas Becket led to the Archbishop’s martyrdom. Richard I’s military exploits earned him the sobriquet of Lionheart but cost the country dearly in taxes for his ransom. John’s reign saw the loss of much of the Angevin empire & conflict with both the Church & his barons resulting in an interdict & Magna Carta.

This course will explore the reigns of Henry II, Richard I & John, from Henry’s vast Angevin empire to the murder of Archbishop Thomas Becket, Richard the Lionheart’s military exploits on the Third Crusade, and the Magna Carta crisis under King John.
