In this course, we hear music by some of the greatest musicians ever in the field of jazz, blues & popular music - and return to that time when vinyl was king & the LP came with outstanding artwork & sleeve notes. We explore in detail albums by such artists as Buddy Holly, Eric Clapton,The Beatles, Miles Davis, Elvis Presley - albums acknowledged as being classics of their style. Many of these are now being reissued today in their original form to a new audience.

Course aim

The aim of this course is to give you an introduction to 10 Classic Albums of the 1950s and 1960s and to the musicians who made them.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for anyone wishing to extend their musical horizons. Musical knowledge or ability are not required.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • understand why each album was influential in the development of the music.
  • understand more about the musicians and their music - I’ll illustrate some aspects on the guitar
  • understand some of the diverse social and cultural contexts in which the music was made.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
