Masterpieces of the Ancient World

This course will take you around the world to look at and examine in depth some of the greatest masterpieces of ancient art. We will explore spectacular artworks from diverse places and times starting with Ancient Iraq and ending with the great stupas in India.

Course aim

We travel from Iraq, Iran, Egypt, Greece, Rome, China and India. Each masterpiece had a story to tell. Their theme and purpose.

Who is the course for?

What topics will this course cover

- The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning - To support each lecture students will be given a CD containing a comprehensive set of handouts summarising each less, a suggested reading list and a few questions to consider relevant to the lecture given.

What will it be like?

WEA classes are friendly and supportive. You will be encouraged to work together with your fellow students and tutor. You will be asked to share your ideas and views in the class and work with the group to give and accept feedback in a supportive environment. The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you to be actively involved in your learning. You may be asked to undertake work to support your course outside of your class.

How will I know I'm making progress?

- A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion - You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know, do or bring?

- Nothing else is needed - It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)

Reading and information sources

- No pre reading or pre course work is required - No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
