Art in History: Eight Italian Cities

Ref: C3741354

We place the emergence of Western art into its historical context: from Ancient pagan Rome and Early Christian catacombs and moving then to the formality of Byzantine Ravenna. Artistic change in Assisi and Padua moved Western art into an era of naturalism causing Pisan and Sienese cultures to look both backwards and forwards. We consider in depth the explosive changes of the early Renaissance in Florence before pulling all these topics together in the High Renaissance in Venice and Rome with a startling denouement in the Sistine Chapel. At all times we will seek to consider historical change and its impact on art.
