The last Habsburg Crown Prince died only in 2011. For five hundred years the House of Habsburg was at the heart of western history and at one stage the extended Habsburg Empire stretched from Central Europe to the Americas. In this course we will examine the fascinating, diverse members of the Habsburg dynasty, including such famous historical figures as the Emperors Maximilian and Charles V, King Philip II of Spain, Empress Maria Theresa, and Emperor Franz Joseph and his beautiful wife, the Empress Elizabeth.

Course aim

A review of the Habsburg dynasty including famous historical figures such as Emperors Maximilian and Charles V, King Philip II Spain, Empress Maria Theresa and Emperor Francis Joseph.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1. Describe the origins of the Habsburg family.
  • 2. Discuss how the Habsburgs achieved a position of dominance in Europe.
  • 3. Describe the lives of the principal members of the House of Habsburg.
  • 4. List the events and circumstances which led to the decline in Habsburg power.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Notepad and pen. There are no additional expenses.
