Day School: Story of a City - London in Art

Ref: C3741352

For centuries London has been at times the economic, political and cultural powerhouse of the World. In the 18th century, and for much of the 19th, it was also the largest and wealthiest city. Naturally, artists were drawn to London to make their reputations. They set out to portray the great and the good, but also the hectic and often chaotic life of the ordinary people. The broad themes for discussion will be: “The Wonder of the World”; The River; The Streets; Work and Leisure; War and Peace. Artists from Canaletto and Hogarth to Sickert and Gilbert & George and many more besides, have drawn inspiration from this teeming and vibrant city.
