Post World War 1

Britain after World War 1 was very different from before. In this year that marks the end of World War 1 we will look at the social, economic and cultural changes that accompanied the decade after the war. Using film footage and extracts from books and documents we will learn more about the world 110 years ago.

Course aim

The main aim of this course is to gain a greater understanding of the British Nation following the First World War from a political, social and cultural viewpoint.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Discuss at least 2 major economic changes in Britain between 1918-30
  • Name at least 3 political changes in Britain between 1918-30
  • relate 3 major changes in the lifestyle of women after World War 1
  • Name 2 writers and 2 artists that influenced post-war society
  • Name at least 2 forms of entertainment that were important in the 1920s

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Students will be encouraged to bring in any memorabilia from the 1920s - and discuss what it meant to them.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • There are few books written on this period but the tutor will suggest books etc. during the course

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
