A Panorama of Russian History and Culture

Ref: C3741298

Due to its vast size and geographical isolation, Russia's history has developed in a different way from that of other European countries. The influence of the Orthodox Church, the rich folk culture, invasion by foreign powers all left their mark on Russian culture, the link between cultural and historical events being very close. This course will introduce students to the wonderful heritage of Russian culture, noting in particular the contribution of Peter the Great and Empress Cathyerine the Great, resulting in a unique flourishing of the arts, literature and music. Presented in an informal manner, the course is richly illustrated with audio/visual materials together with personal accounts of Russian life as experienced by the lecturer during his studies while living in Russia.
