Ports, Resorts and Sleepy Hollows

Ref: C3741253

The Sussex coast has a physical landscape of scenic grandeur, the Seven Sisters cliffs; but also low-key views of windswept mudflats in Chichester Harbour or secluded beaches at Broomhill. The landscape of Wealden sandstones and clays, downland chalk and coastal sands has given the coastline a varied and picturesque setting. This physical landscape is overlain with a human landscape that has seen it as an invasion coast from Pevensey Castle to WW2 airfields. The human story is as complex as its geological one, with settlements waxing at Brighton or waning at Aldrington; ports developed at Shoreham and were lost at Pevensey. Whole settlements either washed away in storms at Old Winchelsea or buried in advancing sands at Broomhill. Resorts with stylish Victorian or Deco buildings epitomise the human coast which has its share of social deprivation. The Sussex coast is a complex landscape.
