This course is for anyone who needs an introduction to Photoshop and the different tools and settings that can be used to edit photographs and create graphic images in a variety of ways. This course is ideal for those who have some experience taking photos but want to move to the next stage of digital photography and process your photographs like a professional. We will also look at lots of tools that can be used for graphic design, illustration, general artwork and printmaking. This course is useful for anyone who works in a creative industry and wants to move more into digital production. It is a beginners course, but people who are familiar with Photoshop will still benefit from many of the tips and tricks that will be taught within this course. Basic IT skills are essential for doing this course, you will need to be confident a PC or Mac computer and be able to save and open files and be familiar with copy and paste functions and Internet Explorer.

Course aim

Show beginners how to use Photoshop, demonstrating how to use the different tools and settings.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • You will need to be competent with a computer, mouse and keyboard.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • • Use the basic tools to edit photographs such as adjustments to exposure, contrast, colour, saturation and converting images to black & white.
  • • Use the different selection tools & methods to apply adjustments or effects to specific areas of a picture.
  • • Crop and resize photos for printing and for using online.
  • • Use the tools pallet to retouch, dodge and burn your photographs to enhance images for a more professional finish.
  • • Add text, images and shapes to create designs for a poster or leaflet.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • The tutor will offer carefully designed tasks where you will be able to practise using Photoshop in class through structured assignments.

What else do I need to know?

  • Any laptop (Windows PC or Apple Mac) that can run Photoshop CS2, CS3, CS4, CS5, CS6 or CC (Creative Cloud - Current version or earlier) will be fine. Lightroom and Photoshop, for just £8.57/mo incl. VAT" is available online.
