Day School: The Romanovs

Just over three hundred years of Romanov rule in Russia ended one hundred years ago with the abdication of Tsar Nicholas II on 15 March 1917. In this Day School we look at the history of the extraordinary Romanov family, considering, such figures as Peter the Great, Catherine the Great, Nicholas I 'the Gendarme of Europe', the Tsar-Liberator Alexander II and, of course, Nicholas II and his consort, Alexandra.

Course aim

This Day School provides an introduction to the fascinating Romanov family. This dynasty reigned over Imperial Russia from 1613 until the 1917 Russian Revolution.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1. Explain how the Romanovs came to power in Russia.
  • 2. Name the principal Romanov monarchs.
  • 3. Demonstrate knowledge of the lives of the principal Romanov monarchs.
  • 4. List the events and circumstances which led to the fall of the Romanov dynasty.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Notepad and pen.
