German Artists and Art Movements of the 20th Century

Ref: C3741211

The course will introduce artists associated with avant garde movements in Germany and Austria at the beginning of the 20th century. Many artists in German cities and in Vienna were inspired by the experiments in painting and sculpture that they saw coming out of Paris at the turn of the 20th century. Artists such as the Die Brucke group in Dresden, led by Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, and the Blau Reiter group in Munich led by Wassily Kandinksy made a signficant contribution to the great changes in art in Europe at this period. In Vienna equally thrilling things were happenning, particularly in the Austrian Secession group led by the enigmatic Gustav Klimt. Works by these and many others will be investigated in this short course.
