Day School: Horace Walpole and Strawberry Hill

Horace Walpole, was born on 24 September 1717. The house he built at Strawberry Hill in Twickenham became noted as an early revival of the Gothic style long before the Victorians. He wrote an early Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto, and his writings on gardens became very influential.

Course aim

Horace Walpole, was an English art historian, antiquarian, politician and avid writer of gossipy letters. This day course will celebrate the 300th anniversary of his birth and the recent re-opening of his house at Strawberry Hill to the public

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Name some of the people who lived along the Thames in 18thc London
  • Describe the architecture of Strawberry Hill
  • Recognize the Gothic revival style in furnishings and architecture

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A notebook is always useful

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • You are encouraged to look at the Strawberry Hill website for up to date information about the restoration of the house and garden
