VIENNA: A CULTURAL HISTORY OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY Vienna was the centre of turbulent changes in politics, social structure, fine and decorative arts as well as music. The rise of the middle classes challenged the prevailing styles of the old order. The construction of the Ringstrasse was to change the city forever and leave a legacy which still exists today.
