VIENNA: A CULTURAL HISTORY OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY Vienna was the centre of turbulent changes in politics, social structure, fine and decorative arts as well as music. The rise of the middle classes challenged the prevailing styles of the old order. The construction of the Ringstrasse was to change the city forever and leave a legacy which still exists today.

Course aim

To introduce the student to the political and social structure of Vienna, the development of the fine and decorative arts,the economic and industrial development of the Empire

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • 1. Identify the Austrian Empire on a map
  • 2. Identify various historical Landmarks
  • 3. Identify a wide variety of buildings in Vienna
  • 4. To identify the importance and legacy of the Ringstrasse in Vienna
  • 5.To identify the contribution of composers and musicans to life in Vienna

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
