Day School: The Grand Tour in the 18th Century

This course takes us to meet the people who went on the Grand Tour including Horace Walpole and Georgiana, Duchess of Devonshire, artists and architects. We see with them the art of Renaissance Florence and the classical remains of Rome. The young dilettanti went to Naples and Pompeii and helped found the British Museum in London. A final fling was had in Venice leaving time to see villas of the Veneto which influenced some 18thc British country houses

Course aim

This course aims to show the lasting cultural significance of the Grand Tour in Britain on paintings and on architecture.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Name some of the people who undertook Grand Tours.
  • Compare reasons for taking the Grand Tour.
  • Assess the significance of the Grand Tour to the developing cultural awareness taking place in 18th century Britain.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion

What else do I need to know?

  • Handouts will be provided and a notebook will be useful
