Day School: Two Great Spanish Masters - Velazquez and Goya

Ref: C3741112

Velazquez rose to fame in the dying court of the Hapsburgs. He was the great Spanish painter of the age, recognised as such by fellow artists like Rubens, as well as his monarch. Thanks to him the court and its people have been immortalised, and so has the reason for the death of the dynasty. Goya followed a different path, being involved in the equally difficult politics of his day and painting peasants and aristocrats alike. He acknowledged his debt to Velasquez. His long life led to his art being divided into many contrasting paths from the pretty, lively decorative designs for the royal tapestries to the sombre and terrifying Black Paintings, via his portraits of the royal court and aristocratic families.
