Day School: Art and Design in the Chilterns

This study day focuses on the work of artists and designers who lived and worked in the Chilterns during the 20th Century. We will discuss works by artists such as John Piper, Paul & John Nash, Richard Hamilton, Eric Gill, Clare Leighton, E. McKnight Kauffer and the textile designer Marion Dorn. One part of the day will be devoted to the landscape paintings of the Chilterns commissioned by Kenneth Clark as part of the wartime Recording Britain scheme. A feature of this unique study day will be to investigate the designs of the Chiltern artists as well as their paintings.

Course aim

To investigate and celebrate the work of 20th Century artists and designers who lived and worked in the Chilterns.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify and appreciate the artists' works specific to the Chilterns area produced for the Recording Britain scheme.
  • Appreciate the diversity of work produced by artists who lived and worked in the Chilterns in the 20th Century.
  • Recognise and appreciate the work of one or two specific artists who lived and worked in the Chilterns in the 20th Century

How will I be taught?

  • Work will be shown via slides. Students will be encouraged to participate throughout the day by asking questions and making their own observationall comments. Books and artefacts will be made available for perusal throughout the day

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • Answers to questions; responses to observations; informal discussions at coffee breaks and lunch period
