Pevsner's Perambulations | Huddersfield

A series of Saturday walking tours in Sheffield, Beverley and Huddersfield which follow in the footsteps of architectural historian Nikolaus Pevsner. Fifty years on, expert tutors will reconstruct the much loved ‘perambulations’ as described in Pevsner’s monumental series ‘The Buildings of England’.

Course aim

A walking tour introducing students to the works of Nikolaus Pevsner and Architectural Appreciation through an interactive exploration of Yorkshire’s towns & cities.

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Compare and contrast the descriptions of a place written by Pevsner with the townscape of today
  • Discuss objective and subjective interpretation in relation to the work of Pevsner and our own views of a place
  • Identify 5 key features in the history of the town or city explored.
  • Display a greater understanding of contemporary society through the history of a townscape
  • Demonstrate an awareness of heritage issues concerning in modern townscapes

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • Practical clothing and footwear will be required. Lunch is not provided but there will be an opportunity to purchase lunch at local outlets. Students can also bring a packed lunch.

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
