A 6 week personal development course targeted at adults who experience stress, depression and other mental health difficulties. Course content will cover communication and listening skills, assertiveness, managing stress, handling difficult situations and setting goals for a more confident you!

Course aim

To help adults develop strategies and improve skills so that they can manage situations with increased confidence and self belief.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • Course is for anyone experiencing stress, depression and other mental health difficulties. Students should be referred by ATI partnership organisations. Contact Diane Quinney 07824 545919 dquinney@wea.org.uk for more information.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Identify 3 personal skills and strengths and how to use them effectively
  • Describe 3 elements of good communication and 3 barriers to communication
  • Describe assertive, aggressive and passive behaviour and explain how to manage 2 different situations assertively
  • Explain what triggers stress for you and describe 2 strategies for managing personal stress
  • Set 3 achievable short term goals for improving personal confidence

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • Ongoing verbal feedback from the tutor, particularly at the recaps at the beginning and end of each course session. Feedback may be given by other members of the group after group tasks

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
  • A wide range of handouts will be provided by the course tutor for information and to help your learning.

What can I do next?

  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
