Beginners' Modern Greek

This is a complete beginners’ course designed to help you develop some basic speaking and listening skills in Greek and gain an insight into the Greek lifestyle and culture. In a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, you will be introduced to some basic everyday language and you will have plenty of opportunity to practise key words and phrases in a fun and enjoyable way through a variety of activities, including games and role plays. Topics include greetings, introductions, requesting snacks and drinks, and asking about and understanding prices. Handouts will be given out to help you revise at home what you learn in class.

Course aim

To provide you with some basic everyday language you need for a visit to Greece / Cyprus and to give you an insight into the Greek lifestyle and culture.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • greet people, respond to greetings and use common courtesies such as “please” and “thank you”
  • ask and say what my name is and introduce a member of my family or friend
  • order snacks and drinks in a café and ask for the bill
  • ask about and understand prices

How will I be taught?

  • The tutor will use various teaching and learning methods to help you develop basic practical language skills. Between sessions you will be expected to spend a few minutes revising your notes to help consolidate your learning.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will regularly receive informal feedback at various points during the course to help you progress.

What else do I need to know?

  • Please bring a pen or pencil and some paper or a notepad with you.

  • are aged 19 years or older on 1st September 2017
