The course will include information regarding the forthcoming VHIS course including course outline and dates along with the commitment required from learners to complete the course . There will be the opportunity to try out VHIS style activities aiming to establish the standard and level of work required plus assess individual learner interest and ability .

Course aim

To allow learners to make an informed decision about enrolling for the forthcoming Volunteers helping in Schools (VHIS) course at Almondbury Community School

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • Students need a Level 1 qualification in English to join this course
  • The ability and skills to identify and negotiate a 2 hour per week placement in a school for the VHIS course would be extremely helpful

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • List the three main components of the VHIS course
  • Explain four learner requirements for the forthcoming VHIS course
  • Have trialled a VHIS activity
  • Record the dates of the forthcoming VHIS course
  • Make an informed decision about enrolling on the forthcoming VHIS course.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Pen and paper would be helpful

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required
