Practical Painting and Drawing Techniques

This course is ideal for those wishing to learn how to create works of art using various media to explore a range of painting and drawing techniques and will suit students wanting to brush up on fundamentals. During the course we will cover observational drawing and painting, still life arrangements using soft pastels and gouache painting in relation to colour theory and mixing. Towards the end of the course students will then work on a project piece using choice of materials and subject matter.

Course aim

The purpose of this course is to explore a range of painting and drawing techniques using various media in order to produce works of art.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Apply knowledge of various painting and drawing techniques and materials in order to produce studies and finished pieces
  • Show a level of creativity and artistic style
  • Engage in discussion with other group members in relation to painting and drawing practice

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Progress to a course with another provider
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
