The course will teach students to prepare their own food using healthy basic recipes, techniques and ingredients. Learners will be encouraged to follow their own recipes after an initial discussion with the tutor. The tutor will brief students on health and safety procedures. Learners will identify different types of ingredients and be encouraged to reduce oil, salt and sugar in their daily intake and to avoid fried food by using healthy alternatives to meet dietary needs. The course will allow learners to prepare their own food using basic recipes, techniques and ingredients and learners will be encouraged to follow their own recipes after an initial discussion with the tutor. Techniques will include making different types of dough, handling, rolling and shaping snacks, preparing the oven and stove when baking.

Course aim

Understand the main benefits of healthy eating and how this impacts on general health Enable learners from the Asian community to use alternative ways of cooking to reduce risk of cholesterol and diabetes.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is for beginners

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Make new foods from many different cultures.
  • Follow health & safety procedures in the kitchen
  • Explore and demonstrate different ways of eating '5 a day'.
  • List ways and demonstrate techniques for reducing fat, sugar and salt in everyday cooking.
  • Adapt my own recipes and try out new foods, preparation methods and ingredients to make my diet more healthy.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • You will be expected to carry out a range of activities in your own time

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
  • It would be helpful if you had access to the internet (Mobile phone, tablet or computer at home or through a library etc.)
