This is a 10 week course and will increase your knowledge and skills of:- Container gardening : by creating a living wall, or windowsill or container gardening Experience the thrill of propagating and growing salad leaves, herbs, decorative edible flowers all of which area healthy foods for humans consumption. Choosing suitable recycled containers for planting. Researching which growing medium to and use and how to prepare for planting Develop your knowledge of propagating plants Provide skills to prepare a medium for growing salads and herbs Actively encourage other residents to take a pride in the environment by leading by example

Course aim

Introduction into garden design, utilising a small growing spaces into a creative and active growing area using a range of horticultural skills: propagation, soil preparation and plant maintenance techniques.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers
  • This course is for people with little spoken English
  • Entry level learners with mixed abilities and different needs. Functional Maths and English will be embedded into the programme.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Name three different varieties of flowers and vegetables
  • Name three different kinds of weeds
  • correctly label three salad leaves that are growing
  • Follow instructions of how to plant seeds
  • Show the difference between bulb and rooted plants

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning
  • Visit a garden and or garden centre for the purpose of identifying different plants

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • A file of work will be kept which will help to record your progress
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress
  • We will be using photographic evidence on the progress of the growing plants.

What else do I need to know?

  • your choice of seeds to plant but make sure they are small enough to grow on a windowsill or garden container

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful

What can I do next?

  • Progress to another WEA course
  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
