Classic drawing techniques: still-life in line and tone

Ref: C3672933

Immerse yourself in the activity of drawing as you learn to see still-life objects in different ways, helping you to draw them more accurately. Work on a different still-life subject each week. Use line and tone, mainly in pencil but optionally also in ink wash and chalks.

Course aim

Improve your drawing confidence and accuracy through careful observation of a range of still-life subjects.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • use the concept of negative shapes to make drawing easier
  • compare the angles of what I see with the horizontal and vertical
  • use light, medium and dark tones to create an illusion of depth
  • see my composition as a whole rather than an inventory of separate items
  • accept my mistakes as an integral part of the drawing process

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • Mainly practical work with some tutor demonstrations and individual advice.

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you
