A singing course to build confidence, and have fun, while improving your singing and knowledge of singing Everyone welcome whether you think can sing or not - it doesn't matter - just take part! Each term we will study a different aspect of singing or music, but the topics Breathing, Healthy Singing and Voice Production will always be covered to some extent

Course aim

A singing course to build confidence in all areas of life, as well as to improve singing and knowledge of singing; to make friends and have fun in the process.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Understand the importance of warming up the voice, and I will take part in group warm-ups.
  • Understand more about the technical aspects of singing, including breathing, voice production, pitch and rhythm.
  • Understand about healthy singing, and how singing can be good for our health.
  • Increase my confidence singing with the rest of the group.

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Nothing else is needed
  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading or pre course work is required

What can I do next?

  • Become involved with the WEA in a range of voluntary work and other activities including campaigning as a WEA member
  • Become involved as a volunteer for a WEA partner or another organisation
  • You could progress to Higher Education courses. Follow link to the PEARL website for information
  • Access the WEA What Next? booklet here
  • Learners can join a choir or an operatic society, or visit folk clubs and open mic nights in order to use their skills. Visiting the theatre to see Musical Theatre or Opera productions and Variety performances will widen the students' knowledge.

  • are paying the standard fee or are on any of the qualifying benefits

  • have a valid email address
  • have been resident in the UK, EU or EEA for the last 3 years
