The Age of Chronicles & Sagas

Ref: C3672842

The course will begin a critical evaluation of the later reign of king Cnut and its impact upon English culture, before going on to consider the chain of events that led to a restoration of the House of Wessex by 1042. We will then look in some detail at the reign of Edward the Confessor putting his achievements into context, relating to the other British kingdoms and his connections with Normandy. In particular, we will consider the importance and advancement of the family of earl Godwin, and Edward's concerns over the restoration of Danish rule in England. We will go on to consider the importance of the crisis of 1052, and look at its effect upon the later reign of Edward by the 1060s. We will conclude by looking in some detail at the events of 1066, and the subsequent establishment of Norman rule in Britain.
