Do you ever look at a painting and struggle to appreciate its value, feel frustrated that you can’t work out its meaning or just want to express your opinions more knowledgeably? This course is aimed at developing your skills and interest in reading art so that you can feel comfortable in discussing artwork with others. In the session I will share approaches to interpreting fine art and we will analyse some artworks together, using activities that you can apply independently in the future. This course is suitable for beginners to intermediate art enthusiasts who are keen to listen and share ideas with others.

Course aim

‘Interpreting Art’ – making sense of images. This is a short guide to analysing professional artwork and sharing ideas effectively. Ideal for beginners and intermediate art enthusiasts wanting to get the most out of gallery visits.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • You will be able to study fine art pieces and assess their meaning
  • You will have learnt where to find relevant information to support ideas
  • You will have more confidence in voicing opinions and discussing artwork with others

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

  • Nothing else is needed
