Course aim

To introduce the learner to the theory and practice of Tai Chi, in a supportive and nurturing manner in order to promote stamina, agility, health, fitness, flexibility, inner peace and to manage stress in a natural and non-intrusive way

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • Prior knowledge or experience not needed. Does not matter what your age is or your level of fitness, everyone is welcome, just come with an open mind and a smile. It is fun!

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Explain the origins of Tai Chi
  • Demonstrate abdominal breathing when sat and stood
  • Carry out a variety of Tai Chi forms and stances
  • Identify some of the health benefits of each form
  • Define the concept of Yin and Yang and the importance of balance in order to develop a sense of inner calm and peace

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • A range of informal activities will be used by the tutor to see what you are learning which may include quizzes, question and answer, small projects and discussion
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning

What else do I need to know?

  • Please wear loose, comfortable clothing and soft pump-like shoes.

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
