Advanced Spanish

The course is aimed at learners who have completed a beginners' course in Spanish or who have substantial experience of speaking the language. We will develop structures and vocabulary learned in previous courses through more detailed study of a variety of themes. Learners will have an opportunity to express wishes, emotions, impersonal expressions, recommendations, doubts/denials and hopes with the subjunctive mood in topics such as traditions, media, publicity, art, literature and current affairs.

Course aim

The purpose of the course is to give intermediate level learners of Spanish the opportunity to consolidate and build on the Spanish they have studied.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is for improvers
  • Students will need to have completed a beginners course in Spanish or to have substantial previous experience of studying or speaking the language.

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Read articles about various topics and express opinions or hypothesis
  • Understand short radio, TV clips and articles which deal with publicity and current affairs
  • Speak about media, art and literature expressing probability, wishes or recommendations
  • Speak about familiar topics and take part in discussions with some spontaneity
  • Enhance my knowledge of the language and culture of various Spanish-speaking countries

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning
  • You may be asked to undertake additional work in your own time to support your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions
  • There will be a number of tasks appropriate to your course such as written work, creating art or craft, video, photography or small projects. Some of these may be marked to help you progress

What else do I need to know?

  • All learning materials will be provided but a bilingual dictionary would be useful.
