This 2 hour session will focus on how existing items of clothing can be re-imagined or altered to create more useful or more decorative items. Simple and easy alterations will be demonstrated using hand and machine sewing, quick decorative fixes will be shown along with options to completely take a garment apart to create something new. All participants must bring along an item they want to work on, that item must be clean. There will be a range of decorative trims and fastenings, along with all necessary sewing equipment for all to use.

Course aim

The session is intended to highlight the easy options to re-use or re-invent items of clothing, by formal alterations, adding decoration or re-imagining into a completely different item ( jeans into a handbag or apron)

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • understand how to achieve an easy alteration or mend to make a garment more wearable
  • create small decorative fabric pieces that can enhance a range of clothing either temporarily ( with fastening) or permanently
  • plan out how to re-use as much of a garment as possible
  • understand the basic sewing equipment I would need to start making alterations etc at home

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

What else do I need to know?

  • All materials will be provided
  • A selection of materials and basic equipment will be provided but you are welcome to bring additional materials with you

Pre-course work, reading and information sources

  • No pre reading is required but research on the subject on the internet or in the library may be helpful
  • Each learner will be expected to bring an item in to work on and ideas of what they would like to do.
