You will begin the course if required with an induction to the sewing machine, you will be allocated a sewing machine that you will use every week. You will be required to bring your own materials and sewing kit inclusive of pins, chalk, tape measure, un-picker and scissors. Not having a sewing kit will inhibit your progress, items are available locally at competitive prices. You will work on a project of your choice whether you start from scratch with a pattern or if you copy a garment you already have. You will cover a number of skills such as, pinning, cutting, laying out patterns and a variety of sewing techniques. You will learn how to use equipment safely. We will promote Health and Wellbeing and most of all engage with other students and have fun.

Course aim

To work at your own pace on your chosen sewing project with the support and guidance of the tutor. Sewing skills will be demonstrated, which can be implemented into your own projects.

Do I need any particular skills or experience?

  • No skills or experience needed
  • This course is suitable for beginners and improvers

By the end of the course I should be able to:

  • Use a sewing machine safely
  • Pin and cut fabric safely
  • Use a pattern
  • Use a garment to reproduce another one
  • Discuss with the tutor/ group what sewing techniques have been used

How will I be taught?

  • The WEA tutor will use a range of different teaching and learning methods and encourage you and the group to be actively involved in your learning

What kind of feedback can I expect?

  • You will have opportunities to discuss your progress with your tutor
  • You will be encouraged to share your work with the group and discuss your learning
  • You will be encouraged to consider other students work and give your opinions and suggestions

  • Sewing kit is required, described above
